"Chander Pahar" (Bengali: চাঁদের পাহাড়), which translates to "Mountain of the Moon", is a 2013 Bengali adventure film directed by Kamaleswar Mukherjee. It is based on the iconic Bengali novel Chander Pahar written by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay in 1937.
Set in the early 1900s, the story follows Shankar Ray Choudhuri, a young Bengali man with a deep passion for geography and adventure. Bored with the prospect of a mundane job in a rural Indian village, he seizes the opportunity to travel to Africa, where he becomes a station master in the middle of the vast wilderness.
In Africa, Shankar encounters wild animals, treacherous terrains, and eventually meets a Portuguese explorer named Diego Alvarez, who tells him about the mythical Mountain of the Moon and its hidden diamond mines—guarded by a legendary monster called the Bunyip.
Fired by the spirit of exploration, Shankar joins Alvarez on a dangerous expedition into the unexplored regions of Africa in search of the Richtersveld diamond mines. What follows is a thrilling tale of survival, friendship, tragedy, and the human spirit’s quest for adventure.
